Motorist charged with manslaughter granted bail |

Rasbert Turner, Star Writer A St Catherine motorist who caused the death of a pedestrian more than a year ago, was granted $200,000 bail in the Spanish Town RM Court on Friday. Khahid Peart of Green Acres was granted bail after a successful application was made by his attorney Lancelot Clarke Jnr., to Resident Magistrate Simone Wolfe-Reece. He returns to court on December 11 when the matter will again be mentioned. Peart is charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of Fitzroy Nicholson, 53, a construction worker from St Johns Road. "Your honour we are saying that the deceased caused his demise by walking in the path of the vehicle, moreover there are no eyewitnesses," Clarke told RM Wolfe-Reece. He told the court that his client was attending a tertiary institution where he studies building construction. Clarke said bail would help his client return to school and also vindicate himself. outstanding certificate It was revealed that the accident reconstruction report and the post-mortem certificate are still outstanding. Allegations are that about 7:30 a.m. on March 19 last year, Peart was travelling along St Johns Road when the vehicle hit Nicholson who was walking. An investigation was launched by Constable Miguel Ebanks of the St Catherine North Traffic Department and a file submitted to the clerk of court in Spanish Town. Peart was later charged. |
