Asafa Powell still valued at millions

Asafa Powell - Gladstone Taylor

Former 100m world-record holder Asafa Powell has been estimated by networthcelebrity.com to command a net worth of US$6.5 million (J$577 million) underlining his value despite his well-documented troubles.

Powell, who held the 100m world record between June 2005 and May 2008 with times of 9.77 and 9.74, has long battled a groin problem, which kept him out of last year's IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea, and caused him to pull up before the end of 100m final at the Olympic Games in London.

The sprinter, who boast a personal best of 9.72 over 100m, is the fifth-fastest man in history and holds the distinction of being the sprinter with the most sub-10 seconds 100m times, with 80 under his belt.

underachiever

With a Commonwealth gold medal in the 100m and two World Championships bronze medals the only individual medals achieved throughout his career, Powell is seen by many as an underachiever due to the fact that he is yet to win a global individual gold medal.

He was also a member of Jamaica's 37.10 world-record 4x100m relay squad at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 but the Jamaicans have since broken that mark twice without Powell; 37.04 at the World Championships last year and 36.84 in London a few weeks ago. Powell turns 30 in November.

Fellow Jamaican and six-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt was valued by Forbes at US$20.3 million (J$1.8 billion), which makes him the 63rd-highest paid sportsman in the world.

Bolt is the current 100m and 200m world record holder with time of 19.58 and 19.19. He shot to international fame at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games after winning both sprints in world-record times before returning a year later to repeat the feat.
