Fisherwoman gets six months for ganja

A fisherwoman who tried to leave the island with more than three pounds (1.36 kilograms) of ganja pleaded guilty and was sentenced in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Thirty-six-year-old Christine Jackson from Rocky Point, Clarendon, is charged with possession of, dealing in and taking steps to export ganja as well as conspiracy.

She is to serve six months in prison for trying to export the drugs. She was also ordered to pay a fine of $6,000 or serve three months for possession.

The crown offered no evidence in relation to the conspiracy charge and she was admonished and discharged of dealing in ganja.

The court heard that on the day in question the accused was about to board an outgoing flight to Barbados when she was stopped and interviewed by security personnel.

When her luggage was searched, the drug was discovered. She was subsequently taken into custody and charged.
