Railway workers terminated
Andre Williams, STAR Writer

Thirty-one workers employed to the Jamaica Railway Corporation (JRC) had their services with the train company terminated on Tuesday, THE STAR has learnt.

According to reports, the state-owned and operated JRC discontinued the passenger train service between Linstead and Spanish Town in St Catherine last Wednesday, as it continued operating at a loss.

Joseph Matalon, chairman at Jamaica Railway Corporation, reportedly stated that the workers who worked at the station and train operators would receive their monthly salaries.

The JRC chairman also outlined that the workers whose services are being terminated, recently joined the organisation with the aim to restart service operation some 15 months ago.

Meanwhile, THE STAR understands that the Jamaican Government is in a winding-down process with operations at the railway company in a bid to privatise the entity.

The JRC reports that a number of parties have indicated interest and one potential investor has been identified to date.

Plans are in place to phase down other sections of the railway over the course of coming months.
