CURTIS CAMPBELL, STAR Writer
Six contestants competed at the recent second semi-finals of Digicel Stars. Co- host Sanjay said last week was steamy, and that the competitors' should aim to better that effort. They tried to do just that. Trudy-Ann Harrison was the first contestant to grace the stage, and she performed Cherine Anderson and Danielle's Rebel. She also danced to every stroke of the dancehall beat. At the end of her display, judge Carlene Davis said she showed versatility. The 'devil' judge, Conroy, said she needed to step up her singing because the competition was not a dancing contest. D-Major and Koffy both agreed that she performed well because she was able to dance and sing at once. John-Ross Austin was next with gospel, and he sang four Days Late. The audience screamed throughout his set as he displayed strong voice control. Koffy said he had a powerful voice and he could do no wrong, and D-Major said John-Ross was a good, natural singer. Conroy agreed with his fellow judges, but he also said the vocals were a bit pitchy on the high notes. Ashley Donaldson was next, singing Survivor by Destiny's Child. Dressed as a boxer, she punched her with vocals but the judges who didn't seem too impressed. D-Major said he loved the presentation but remarked that she sounded hoarse. Carlene said she used the stage well but she allowed the dancing to distort her vocals. Koffy, who was in defence of his mentee, said her vocals weren't the best during the display, but he believes she is way better than some of the other contestants. At Koffy's remarks, Sanjay laughed: "the competition among the judges turn up more than the competitors." Golda 'Big Mama' Watson was next and she performed a medley comprising I Wanna Dance With Somebody and I'm Every Woman by Whitney Houston. Conroy said, "big mama did well and she stepped out her zone," while Koffy said she was entertaining. The second male for the night, Alwyn Bleeching, came next and he sang System by Romain Virgo. D-Major said he loved the presentation and Carlene Davis shared the same sentiment. Koffy said Alwyn was original and expressed that he was the man to beat. The final contestant Lawayne McLean, follwed with gospel music. She sang All Things Are Possible. Koffy said she turned up the standard of the competition and Conroy said he liked the performance and what she brings to the Digicel Stars. D-Major believed some notes were too pitchy; however, he described her as being a good singer. The survivors from this week's semi-final will be combined with last week's survivors for the final grouping.
