Former Jamaica hurdler faces molestation rap

A former hurdler for Jamaica's national team who is accused of molesting a 15-year-old girl in the United States has been charged with three counts of lewd and lascivious molestation, THE STAR has learnt.

According to a Sun Sentinel report, 42-year-old track coach Matthew Love was arrested on a warrant by Fort Lauderdale police and the US Marshals Florida Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force.

Information reaching THE STAR is that in April 2011, the alleged victim gave Davie police a sworn taped statement and said that Love became "too friendly, and too touchy" during stretching exercises at the K-12 college preparatory school.

She claimed that in the first incident the coach touched her breasts while helping her stretch.

Police say the girl had suffered an injured hamstring and Love took her out of physical education class in March 2011 to give her "rehab".

It is alleged that while stretching her quads and pushing her leg toward her chest, he slipped his hands beneath her shirt and sports bra and touched her breasts.

The matter, THE STAR understands, was not reported at the time.

However, during similar stretching exercises the next day, he again allegedly touched the teen inappropriately, and she protested.

Also, in an alleged third incident, the girl told police that the coach touched her breasts while at a track meet.

Meanwhile, Love has been released on $30,000 bond, but Broward County Judge John 'Jay' Hurley ordered him not to work as a track coach or a teacher while out on bond.

Interestingly, Love has been a coach for close to a decade. He was also a finalist in the 1995 Pan American Games for Jamaica.

THE STAR understands that the Davie police have now launched an investigation to see if there are any other victims.
