Jarrett Park to host night cricket

Paul Clarke, Star Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

Jarrett Park has only twice hosted night cricket, once in the early 1980s and again in the mid-90s, now, however, there are plans to regularly have night cricket starting with a Twenty/20 clash this Sunday, between a St James Masters XI and a select Invitational Masters XI team.

Action gets under way at 6:30 p.m.

The match is being used to gauge the calibration of lights at the Park and is also a precursor to the yet-to-be-named cricket league that will utilise Jarrett Park, according to its director of cricketing matters, Chester Sterling.

"This match is being planned to do a number of things, but in part, it is being used to test the lights to see where it pitches on the field and if it can be used for the safe completion of night cricket games," Sterling said.

"We have planned a cricket competition that will include the western parish teams. And this game is the test. If we are satisfied with the results, then we will proceed in releasing a start date."

The logistics at this point are being worked out, Sterling said of the use of Jarrett Park, which will also host football matches in the upcoming schoolboy football season. It is the home field of former champions St James High.

Tentative

"That is the concern that we have, as with the schoolboy football season just around the corner, I am not certain how it will play out. Tentatively, we are looking at a late September start to this cricket league, but of course it remains tentative," Sterling said.

Additionally, Sunday's cricket match will be used to honour a number of outstanding former St James players including David Bernard, Owen Brown, Sam Reid and Barrington Barker.

Aslo included in the St James Masters XI will be Everton Coach, Alrick Haughton, Jerry Reid, Ezekiel Lawson and Chester Sterling, while former St Ann mayor Ivan Anderson will turn out for the Invitational squad. The match is sanctioned by the St James Cricket Association.
