Man fined $10,000 for assault

A man who pleaded guilty to assaulting another man who he thought stole his phone was fined $10,000 in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

He is Courtney Walters who has been charged with assault.

Walters who pleaded guilty with explanation was fined $10,000 or two months in prison.

In addition, Walters was told to pay $4,000 to the complainant for his medical expenses.

Allegations are that, on the day in question, the accused injured the complainant's hand and leg during an argument over his missing phone.

Further explained

The accused told the court that he suspected that the complainant had stolen his phone and he was trying to persuade him to return the phone.

However, he further explained to the court that things got out of control when he realised that the complainant was not cooperating with him.

"Your Honour, he stole my phone and I was trying to persuade him to give me back my phone," the accused told the court.

Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly-Williams, in handing down her sentence, told the accused that next time he should not take matters in his own hands. Instead he should make a report to the police.
