DJ Smurf: a man of many talents |
|||||
|
DJ Smurf, whose real name is Errol Stewart, has been blazing a trail on the music scene not only as a disc jock, but also as a producer and show promoter. The disc jock has been engaging a wide cross section of persons who want to hear unique stuff. However, he has also managed not to stray far from the mainstream market. The jovial, yet humble husband and father of two, hails from Kingston and has always been interested in the turntables. He was influenced by notable radio personalities Barry G and GT Taylor and also by sound systems, Metro Media, and Stone Love, to name a few. "While attending Calabar, I would conduct cassette clashes with classmates. Trust me! We had a lot of fun at school," Smurf said. After high school, the DJ furthered his studies by obtaining a diploma in computer science at the Mico Teachers' College. He began his career in the early 1990s, in the 'Vinyl Era', playing at various events, an experience which propelled him on to the music scene as a fan favourite. He eventually became a DJ on Hot 102 where he rapidly developed a loyal fan base before venturing on to television as a DJ and co-host for The Partyon CVM. He also entertained viewers as a 'selected DJ'on the Up & Live programme on Hype TV. Variety is the spice of life, especially when a DJ is trying to attract a large audience, and so Smurf shows his versatility with his selection of music. His ability to entertain a wide demographic is proven during his present stints on Zip103 and IRIE FM. He related the key to his success as a selector: "As a DJ, you have to learn to observe your audience, look at their body language, facial expression, and you will eventually know what they want to hear. A lot of DJs play for themselves and their friends. This should not be the case; we should be playing for the masses. The key to becoming a true DJ is to know your audience and give them what they want." Selecting duties Apart from his selecting duties, Smurf has also had success with music production, with the 12 to 12 rhythm featuring Tony Matterhorn, Twins of Twins, Konshens, and others. He has also released the Hot Chocolate rhythm with She Sey A Yah Suh Nice by Potential Kidd, and Mi Love Mi Mate by Lady Saw, among other songs. "I have some projects that are currently in the pipeline. They will be completed by the end of August," Smurf said. But there is still one other side to Smurf: promotions. The DJ dons this hat by hosting events such as the popular 12 to 12 inclusive beach party, which will have one of its stagings in November at Fort Clarence Beach in Portmore, St Catherine, and the Chocolate Bunnies party, which is held every Good Friday at Margaritaville in Ocho Rios, St Ann. |
