Sakima Mullings, who is rated as one of Jamaica's top professional boxers, must have created boxing history last Saturday night, when, instead of stepping away after knocking down his opponent, he helped him to his feet before the referee could administer a count. This was in the main bout of a four-fight card at the YMCA auditorium in Kingston, that was promoted by Willie Yap and sponsored by Rum Fire Rum. Mullings was clearly superior to Robinson and put him down in the first round and again two more times in round two. Engaging Robinson in the third round, Mullings backed him into a corner and landed two sharp punches that made the now dazed Robinson go to his knees. Instead of backing away and allowing the referee to administer a count, however, Mullings showed compassion by putting his hands under his opponent's arms and lifted him to his feet. Shortly after this, a clearly outclassed Robinson, indicated to the referee that he could not continue, and the fight ended at the 51-second mark of the third round. Mullings, who fought as a welterweight in this bout was much too powerful for Robinson In the semi-final over eight rounds, Devon Moncrieffe and Anthony Osbourne put on a great show for the fans. They showed good boxing skills in a close, hard- fought fight, that only saw Moncrieffe gaining the ascendancy in the last few rounds to take a unanimous decision. Tsetsi Davis and Ricardo Planter also had a crowd-pleasing encounter that saw Davis getting home on points. This too was a competitive fight that the fair-sized crowd really enjoyed. In the curtain raiser, Rudolph Hedge scored a huge upset by knocking out Martin Anderson after two minutes 21 seconds of the first round. |
