Cops on corruption rap face court

Two of three policemen implicated in soliciting money from a motorist who was found to be in violation of the Road Traffic Act appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's court on Friday to answer to the charges.

They are Corporal Terron Andrade and Constable Germaine Welch.

Both accused are charged with two counts of corruptly soliciting and indirectly accepting money.

The court was told that the policemen asked the motorist what he could do for himself, after which $30,000 was agreed to be paid over.

sting operation

It's alleged that a district constable who was absent from court on Friday collected $20,000 of the $30,000 requested.

A sting operation was set up and all three policemen were arrested then later charged after a ruling from Director of Public Prosecutions.

Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly Williams granted the officers $300,000 bail with one or two sureties.

A fingerprint order was made and both officers are to surrender their travel documents.

They are to return to court on August 14 when the matter will again be mentioned.
