Dancehall deejay Spotlight has come a long way since he began his career in the late 1990s.

He was first introduced to music via the Chester Walker-produced Sipping On Some Guinness in 1999. The song was an instant hit among dancehall fans and was also used by the world-famous Guinness company in their local ad campaign that year.

niche for himself

The always dapperly dressed deejay has carved a niche for himself in the local music business by working with some of the best producers in dancehall music including Rohan 'Snow Cone' Fuller, Cordell 'Skatta' Burrell, Troy Mclean, and Chester Walker.

Over the past few years, he has amassed a decent catalogue of hit songs which includes Impossible Fi Climb When You Badmind, Ain't Nutten Worse Than Red Eye People, Sexy, and No Credit Lef,which was done with Queen Paula and Pickney.

He also featured in a commercial for J. Wray & Nephew's popular Rum Cream drink alongside Macka Diamond in 2005.

Spotlight, who has added a new moniker to his existing stage name and is now Spotlight Kunta Kunta, is looking to take his career to even greater heights now that he has released his debut album, Shine Bright. The album features 12 tracks, all of which were produced by Spotlight, and is available on all major online music sites including Itunes and Amazon.com.

"A lot of people are asking me why I now call myself Spotlight Kunta Kunta. This new name represents the struggles I have been through musically and otherwise. I came up with the name after watching a film about Kunta Kinte. I'm ready to take my career to the top right now, been in the game for a good while now. My album is very good. I really put a lot of hard work into it and the results are good. The fans really love it," he said.

Spotlight recently released a single from the album titled Done Chat, which is a message-laced dancehall track in which he encourages people to go for their goals no matter how hard things might be.

"I just dropped the first single from the album, and it's very hot. The people love it. Done Chat is all about upward mobility, the sky is the limit. We have to achieve our dreams no matter what."
