Technomoto will go all the way

Jimmie, STAR Racing Writer

ANTHONY Nunes' TECHNOMOTO is still in his comfort zone and should tick off a second straight win after romping home by a dozen lengths at nine furlongs last time out.

Last year's derby winner, TECHNOMOTO won his first race almost a year later when he spreadeagled non-winners-of-four, beating COLD GROUND out of sight in fast splits out of the chute on June 23.

Whereas he had little or no speed to contend with last month, TECHNOMOTO should have company on the lead as the United States-bred pair of NYABINGHI and REASONABLE PRESS are both quick horses.

However, TECHNOMOTO's running style perfectly suits the mile chute, more so if he has a strong following wind to push him down the backstretch.

Last month, he ran rivals into the ground, clocking splits of 47.1 and 1:11.2 into the lane, completing a mile in 1:38.0 as he cruised home unmolested in 1:52.0 for nine furlongs.

TECHNOMOTO returns with 55.0 kilos with patient Dick Cardenas aboard. Cardenas won last year's derby aboard TECHNOMOTO in gate-to-wire fashion and knows how to rate the colt.

Though NYABINGHI and REASONABLE PRESS are speed horses, the relentless pace of a quick mile race should take toll on both.

NYABINGHI runs his best races over two turns, preferring a more relaxed pace, whereas REASONABLE PRESS tends to backup when used on the lead.

REASONABLE PRESS had NYABINGHI six and a half lengths behind when outbattled by GO GO YVONNE at 1500 metres on June 16 and looks a safe bet to hold Peter McMaster's filly at a mile.

However, to beat TECHNOMOTO, REASONABLE PRESS will have to be close enough to the local-bred down the backstretch and be prepared to change gears leaving the three pole.

Cardenas won't be hanging around for Winston Griffiths to pounce, which should drag REASONABLE PRESS off his bridle too early.

CLASSIC BEAU similarly beat REASONABLE PRESS at a mile on March 10, even allowing the United States-bred weight that afternoon.

Since winning the derby last year, TECHNOMOTO has matched strides with the best horses in the country. REASONABLE PRESS is on the improve but will find the local bred elusive down the backstretch and won't get back in the stretch run.
