BARCELONA, Spain: This being her last World Junior Championships, Holmwood Technical High student, Chrisann Gordon, is not about to let the injuries she has suffered throughout the season prevent her from winning a medal. Gordon was the number two ranked female 400 metres junior in the world last year with her time of 51.82 seconds, but was plagued by injuries this season resulting in her not finishing the 400m event at the Carifta Trials or the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association Boys and Girls' Championships. "At Carifta Trials I got a hamstring injury in the right leg and then I went to Champs and I got a cramp in the other leg, but at the moment I think I am okay to run," Gordon shared. "I just want to go in the race and forget about injuries and do my best," she added. She has conceded that the injuries have affected her self-belief, but she remains determined to do well.
"The injuries have affected my confidence but I just want to forget about them now and do my best, because only my best is good enough and I know I can get a medal at World Juniors," Gordon stated. The 17-year-old's season best effort stands at 52.40 seconds which she ran at the senior Trials in June, while her personal best came in her victory at Boys and Girls' Championships last year when she posted 51.62 seconds. She was unable to defend her title at Champs this year, as an injury forced her to abort the race at the 80-metre mark. This is not her first run-in with injury, as in 2010 she underwent a minor surgery before returning to lead Holmwood to victories in the 4x400m and 4x800m at the Penn Relays. Gordon is set to run in the heats on tomorrow's second day of the six-day championships. |
