Doctor on sex charges offered $800,000 bail

A medical doctor who was recently arrested and charged for several sexual offences in relation to his involvement with two minors was yesterday offered $800,000 bail when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

Rakesh Thomas, 34, who practises at a health clinic in Lawrence Tavern, St Andrew, was arrested on June 26.

According to the Centre for the Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse, Thomas on several occasions lured two girls, ages 14 and 15, respectively, to his office and performed various sexual acts with them.

The doctor was subsequently charged with two counts of grievous sexual assault, having sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 16, sexual grooming and sexual touching following allegations that he was unlawfully involved with two teenagers.

Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly Williams offered the doctor bail on strict conditions.

He is to surrender his travel documents with a stop order in place and report to the Matilda's Corner Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Thomas was also warned to stay away from the Lawrence Tavern community and not to contact any of the young ladies.

A preliminary hearing has been set for September 4 when the matter will again be mentioned.
