Elephant Man: The Energy God

Elephant Man

Oneil 'Elephant Man' Bryan is, hands down, the most colourful character in the modern dancehall era.

How colourful is the anaconda armed one? Let's see ... who else could run a competition for Reggae Sumfest's Dancehall Night, giving away $50,000 to the person who can guess what colour his hair will be? It will be pretty hard to win; he has been through all the colours on a paint chart palette, plus combinations thereof.

And which other deejay could come onstage in a Captain America suit, shield and all, and blaze up the night? Only Ele.

He is of Scare Dem Crew pedigree, where he demanded "how many girls do we get when we ready? Many, many!" He was soon on his own, Elephant Man's stocky frame running counter to the skinny artiste trend - but Ele has never been one to follow any template. C'mon, how many deejays could rock it with a lisp? (Or is that lishp?)

His exuberant style and interactive performances, where he would often hold out his arms and command the heaviest of ladies to "jump up!" and then run around with them with many a juk was perfect when the dance craze really hit in the early 2000s. Elephant Man hit the big times with Log On, Pon Di River, Signal The Plane, Juk Gal and Bun Dung Dat, among others. These led to a the Log On and Get Physical albums, plus a stint with Sean 'Diddy' Coombs, a real Higher Level.

Two combinations in this decade, This is How We Do It with Bounty Killer and this year's Siddung Pon It with Lady Saw show the partying and raunchy sides that have characterised and sustained the man whose "shizzle!" can mean anything from 'hello' to 'quiat and behave yusself'.

Someone say "scubaayyy!!!!"
