David Rodigan: the Gentleman of Dancehall |
![]() |
||||
![]() David 'Ram Jam' Rodigan David 'Ram Jam' Rodigan plays a sound with the glee of a child, but introduces the songs with the detail of a man who delights in the history of the music. He plays on radio and rocks the clubs, yet takes on the toughest in any clash, anywhere, anytime. He was part of the huge radio launch of the Sleng Teng rhythm in a clash with Barry G in 1985. By the way, he is British. And his conduct is so impeccable that there are those who dub him 'The Rudeboy Gentleman', or, as Rodigan was introduced at one UK Cup Clash, 'The Gentleman of Dancehall'. The Queen of England thinks he's great too; this year Rodigan was honoured with the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE). And on International Reggae Day, along with Barry G and Dermott Hussey, he was honoured for his contribution to Jamaican popular music. In case you think the honours have softened Pappa Rodigan, he took World Clash R.E.S.E.T. session in New York in April. Involved in broadcasting for more than three decades, Rodigan hosts a radio show on Kiss 100 from London (Remember Tiger said, "Big up Rodigan from Kiss FM" in When) on Sunday nights. But it's not radio play that earns Rodigan that most elusive and fragile of things in dancehall - respect. It is his deep dub box, with Tenor Saw and Supercat exclusives, a special cut of Johnny Osbourne singing "dub plates playing in the ghetto tonight" and a mix of No No No by King Tubby himself. Loaded with Bounty dubs and armed with his personalised selection of the latest tracks, Rodigan is a hard sound man fi dead. And when he puts on a Kangol hat and starts to draw foundation tunes and skank, sound boy, watch out!!! Link to David Rodigan at Death Before Dishonour 6: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXpJBKcLfVo |
