RAYMOND GRAHAM, Star Writer
Just like they did in the 100 metres two days ago Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Yohan Blake stole the spotlight on yesterday's final day of competition, at the JAAA/Supreme Ventures Limited National Senior Championships, as both took the sprint double by winning the 200 metre titles. "This feels really good I can't complain," Blake said, following the race. "I wasn't surprised because I was working hard but I know Usain's strength and his level but he has not been 100 per cent so I will just concentrate on getting ready for the Olympics now." Fraser-Pryce was out of the blocks like a rocket with favourite and defending champion Veronica Campbell-Brown failed to peg her back eventually losing her form close to the finish line, relegated to third as Fraser-Pryce won in a personal best 22.10 seconds. Olympic silver medallist Sherone Simpson ran a good race to pip Campbell-Brown for second, in a season best of 22.37 seconds, with Campbell-Brown taking third in 22.42 seconds. In the men's final, Blake proved that his win over Bolt in the 100 metres was no fluke, once again upstaging his teammate to capture the half-lap event in 19.80 seconds. It was a clean sweep for the Glen Mills coached Racers Track Club as Bolt clocked 19.83 for second, with Warren Weir flying in to overtake Nickel Ashmeade for third in 20.03 seconds. Earlier, Novlene Williams-Mills and Dane Hyatt crowned themselves National champions in the women's and men's 400 metres, respectively. Williams-Mills, the defending champion and country's top female quarter-miler this season, despite being pressured by former National champion Rosemarie Whyte on the final straightaway, showed her class in the final 50 metres to win in 50.60 seconds. Whyte ran well for second in 50.78 seconds, while, in the shocker of the evening in the event, Christine Day finished third in 51.00 seconds, as Beijing Olympic silver medallist in the event Shericka Williams, had to settle for fourth in 51.39 seconds. Looking the most relaxed athlete in the preliminary rounds, Hyatt, maintained his good form in the final to capture his first National title in the men's one-lap event, as he raced to a season best of 44.83 seconds. Former Garvey Maceo High's Rusheen McDonald, who is a student at the University of Technology, upstaged his more senior competitors to finish second in a personal best of 45.10 seconds, with World Championships finalist Jermaine Gonzales grabbing third in a season best 45.18 seconds. Favourite Brigitte Foster-Hylton ran true to form in the women's 100 metres hurdles. Despite a close affair in the early stage, the world number two in the event so far this season, used her experience to pull away from her rivals in the latter stage to win in 12.78 seconds. Her teammate at MVP, Latoya Greaves, who promised so much in her junior days, finally came to the fore by finishing second in 12.77 seconds as former World junior silver medallist Shermaine Williams took third in 12.80 seconds. In field events, Kimberly Williams won the triple jump for women with a mark of 14.52 metres, as Trecia Kay Smith was second with 13.94 metres. Dorian Scott captured the men's shot put with a winning heave of 20.72 metres, to get the better of O'Dayne Richards who was second with 19.92 metres. |
