Wright agrees Senior Cup needs reform ... But says competition also needs support

President of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA), Lyndel Wright, says he understands the plight of sidelined West Indies spin bowler Nikita Miller, who earlier called for an overhaul of the structure of the two-day national Senior Cup.

"We see and recognise what is happening in the competition in terms of low scores in matches, and other competition breaches, and agree that this could be a result of the number of teams participating in the competition," said Wright.

"But this is not entirely our fault as in order to do those things one needs funds, and prior to the start of the competition, proposals were made to several companies regarding sponsorship, but we were unsuccessful," he added.

Miller, whose team Melbourne is one of eight teams down to contest this weekend's quarter-finals, said too many teams were in the competition and that it was affecting the overall quality of play.

unregistered players

The 22-team competition, which has been without a sponsor for the second straight season, saw a number of matches ending inside the first day, the rampant use of unregistered players and teams not honouring their fixtures.

One such occurrence took place last weekend when a do-or-die fixture between St Catherine Cricket Club and St Catherine Cricket Associ-ation ended with the latter forfeiting the match due to a lack of players on the second day.

There was also an incident where G.C. Foster failed to turn up for their away fixture against four-time defending champions Manchester, who had already booked their spot in the final eight

"The competition's Competitions and Complaints Committee will be looking into the various reports. They will then make recommen-dations to the board following, and then we will decide what sanctions should be taken," Wright said.

"The plan is to review what is taking place, and based on what we are seeing there are likely to be changes for next season."

Other matches on this weekend are Melbourne versus St Mary at Melbourne, Kensington playing away to Manchester at Man-chester High, and the Jamaica Defence Force hosting Hanover at Up Park Camp.
