West Indies' Sunil Narine ...Windies coach backs spinner to bounce back in ODI series West Indies head coach Ottis Gibson has tipped young spinner Sunil Narine to be successful in the upcoming one-day internationals against England, despite getting off to a less-than-impressive Test debut in Edgbaston last week. Narine, one of the Indian Premier Leauge's (IPL) best players this season, was in sensational form for Kolkata Knight Riders taking 24 wickets and finishing with the competition's second-highest economy rate. However, the bowler found the going tough in his introduction in the longer format of the game, getting no wickets in 15 over with just one maiden and conceding an expensive 70 runs. In addition to a lack of experience, Gibson proposed that the change in the game's format may have been another reason for the spinner's struggles. "We tend to forget formats. When you are playing one-day cricket where Sunil is going to bowl 10 overs or T20 where he will bowl four and you need to score then you go after him, if you not picking which way the ball is spinning then he is a danger," Gibson told journalists ahead of the start of the series tomorrow, yesterday. "In a Test match where a guy can sit in for 10 overs, then it becomes a different thing. In addition, Edgbaston didn't offer a great deal of spin. In the series against Australia, the wicket offered a great deal of turn, so he we very effective. However, I believe he will be effective for the one-day series, when you have to score playing against him it is different," Gibson said. The coach, however, pointed out that the team will be careful not to put too much pressure on the shoulders of the 24-year-old, who is still developing his craft and expect the player to be given adequate support by part-time spinners Marlon Samuels and Chris Gayle. "We have Marlon who has been excellent for us bowling in our one-day team, Chris is back, he can bowl some off breaks so we try not to put too much pressure on him," Gibson said. "You can't expect that he is going to go out and bowl out a team, win you games, that's not going to happen right away, it will take time." |
