RAYMOND GRAHAM, Star Writer
Olympic Champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is pleased with her progress so far this season and believes she is in excellent form ahead of the National Senior Trials, which gets under way in two weeks. Fraser-Pryce scorched a quality field, which included World Champion Carmelita Jeter, and Allyson Felix, at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York last weekend. The sprinter clocked 10.92, her first sub-11 clocking, breaking away from the field early in typical fashion to record her first 100m win of the season. Tianna Madison was second (10.97), while Jeter (11.05) and Felix (11.07) were third and fourth, respectively. Fraser-Pryce believes the stellar run could be a sign of things to come. "I am never an athlete who runs lots of sub-11 before the National Championship, so I guess a sub-11 race for me is really amazing! I guess my training has been going really well. I never doubt my coach (Stephen Francis) because I have to be confident in him, so I have to give all the credit to him," Fraser-Pryce told the Track Ledger (http://trackledger.com). "It [victory] was definitely a confidence booster, and I am looking forward to the Championship. It is definitely going to be exciting. And it's all about who gets it right on that day." However, the diminutive sprinter was quick to point out that consistency was still her main objective, and she insisted that she would not read too much into the result. "When you run one race, it doesn't mean it is going to go right that day. If you drop, you have to get back up and go again. That is where your confidence comes from. In a race, you have to be prepared for anything. If you finish in last place, it's up to you to go back home and train hard and come back to do your best," Fraser-Pryce said. The athlete, however, gave assurances that she was working hard to defend her Olympic title and looking to improve all aspects of her race, in addition to her well-known bullet start. "I am working on pretty much everything. It is not just about the start; it is about everything. Everyone knows that I am a good starter, so the secret is out, but I have to work hard on the last part of my race." |
