RAYMOND GRAHAM, STAR Writer
National junior record holder, Chanice Porter, will be absent from the girls' Under-20 high jump at this weekend's Supreme Ventures Limited JAAA National Junior Champion-ships but this should not take anything away from the competitiveness of the event. Edwin Allen High's Kimberly Williamson, Wolmer's Girls' Shanice Hall and St. Elizabeth Technical's Peter-Gay Reid should still ensure a battle royal for the top two spots. Porter, who won at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Championships where she produced a record jump of 1.86 metres, will be concentrating on the long jump where she won the gold at the World Youth Championships a year ago. Carifta and Penn Relays champion Williamson will definitely start favourite to win this weekend, but it will not be a walkover for her. At the Carifta Trials, she was beaten into second place by Reid, who won with 1.80 metres. Williamson and Hall cleared the same height but were second and third, respectively, on countback. Hall was very competitive at the Penn Relays as she battled Williamson for the top spot. Williamson, however, found top form in the latter stages to win with 1.83 metres, with Hall getting second with a clearance of 1.76 metres. Despite getting the better of Hall on all occasions so far this season, Williamson cannot be complacent. It will take her best performance to end her local season on a high and then set her sights on a medal for Jamaica at the World Junior Championships. Reid cannot be written off. She is a strong competitor and won the event in consecutive years, 2009 and 2010, at the Penn Relays. |
