23-y-o pleads guilty to fraud

A 23-year-old Jamaican man has pleaded guilty to mail fraud and money laundering in the United States (US).

He is Jeffery Augustus Bernard who US authorities say targeted senior citizens.

According to an Associated Press report, Bernard was one of four men who targeted elderly citizens throughout the US, telling them they'd won the 'Mega Millions Lottery'.

The men were arrested last October about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh after a victim in Topeka, Kansas, sent US$25,000 to the men, supposedly to satisfy costs associated with the winnings.

The victim never received any money and reported the suspected fraud.

Sentencing is scheduled for September 4.

Bernard could face 40 years in prison or a fine of US$750,000 or both fine and imprisonment.
