Parents protest attack on teacher

The police in St Catherine along with the Ministry of Education Region 6 are investigating the physical attack on a teacher at the Old Harbour Primary School.

The incident resulted in a protest by concerned parents at the school gate yesterday.

As early as 7 a.m., the parents converged and demanded strong action be taken against the parent.

"We must respect our teachers. Without them we would not have any other profession. It cannot be right for anyone to just jump in class and beat teacher. " A concerned parent said. The parents demanded better security at the school and more respect for those who taught at the school.

"If the child was even punished, you are not setting any good example by attacking the education system, it is very wrong," a woman told The Star.

The Star was informed that about noon on Tuesday, an irate mother rushed into a classroom and used an umbrella to rain blows on a teacher. The female teacher has been accused of punishing the woman's eight-year-old daughter.

It is claimed the child was told to pick up paper as a disciplinary measure. Meanwhile, the police met with the affected parties along with ministry personnel, and a probe is under way. The school principal refused an interview with The Star.
