Perhaps you don't need $1 million incentive to write an app. Maybe, you'll develop an app just for the fun of it. Before you do, you should take note of these apps already in the market. iBeer, iMilk (iOS) Get all of the enjoyment without any of the calories with these two apps. Using the accelerometer found in the iPhone, these apps mimic the experience of drinking beer or milk on the screen of your phone. Just hold the phone up to your head and astound your friends as the fluid 'flows'. Dunk Dialer (iOS, Android) Have you ever sent a text or made a call after a few drinks and then regretted? Well, this app will prevent you from repeating your mistakes, sort of. Once launched, the app forces you to answer a series of questions to determine if you are sober enough to make a call or send a text. If you don't pass the test, you don't get access to the calling/texting services. But the important fact is you have to launch the app. If you're so drunk you need intervention, you may be too drunk to launch the app in the first place. iFart, iNap@Work (iOS) Moving from visual effects to sound effects, these two apps may be considered offensive. iFart loudly replicates the winded sounds of passing wind. iNap@Work has a collection of sounds that give the appearance of being busy, keyboard strokes, ring phones, pen tapping and all. Mind you, if your boss looks in on you, the ruse is up! Lightsaber (iOS, Android) I feel victim to the vuvuzela crazy after the last World Cup. I was so fascinated, I downloaded the app on my phone and shock it like crazy until my arm hurts. With the Lightsaber app, I can instead replicate the smooth, sweeping moves of Luke Sky-walker of Star Wars fame. Same principle. Your phone screen lights up like the infamous sci-fi-based weapon while making the trademark 'swoosh' sound. Virtual Zippo Lighter (iOS) Maybe this one is not so useless, especially if you are a non-smoker. With this app, you can flick the lighter open and spark the flame that appears beautifully on the screen. The flame reacts to your movements too. Bic has a similar app. Want a romantic night and too cheap to spring for candles, not to worry, there's an app for that. I tried to find useless apps on the BlackBerry, and searched in vein for useless and fun. Guess it is really a great business tool. Oh well. The point is, anyone can come up with a good idea for a popular app. It's what you do with the idea that counts. I challenge you to 'think different', 'be bold' and enter the Digital Jam 2.0 App Competition. Best of luck to you. Tech Fix: Each of the three major telecoms offers both cloud storage and Internet access to the cloud. If you chose to forgo telecoms and seek cloud storage overseas, try Microsoft's Skydive, Google Drive, DropBox, Box and iCloud. Each offers at least 2GB of service, syncing and mobile access. |
