Good start for Cavalier |
|||||
Cavalier's coach David Laylor. Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) representative Cavalier made a winning start in the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) Confede-ration play-offs, with a 1-0 away win over New Green FC on Sunday. Cavalier, the three-time defending champions of the KSAFA Super League, are one of four teams hunting two promotional spots to the Red Stripe Premier League. The three other teams contesting the play-offs are Savannah FC of Westmoreland, the Western Confede-ration champions; St Ann's Volvo FC, the Eastern champions; and New Green FC of Manchester, the South Central Confederation winners. Following the first round set of games, Savannah, who defeated Volvo 2-0, are top of the standing with three points, the same as Cavalier, with both Volvo and New Green pointless. At Brooks Park in Manchester, the visiting Cavalier, playing in their changed strip of orange and black, eked out a close 1-0 win over New Green courtesy of a Damion Jackson goal in the 71st minute. It was an evenly matched encounter but a very good away win for Cavalier, who are in their third consecutive play-offs. The David Laylor-coached aggregation is favoured to be one of the two teams to gain promotion and could join the powerful KSAFA outfits, Boys' Town, Waterhouse, Tivoli Gardens, Harbour View and Arnett Gardens in the premier league. Cavalier, who won the premier league in 1981 and last played top-flight football in 1995, could make it six KSAFA teams in the 12-team premier league competition. Clarendon is the only other parish with teams in the premier league. The teams are Humble Lion and Sporting Central Academy. Cavalier will be aiming to make it two from two when they host Savannah in round two at the Collie Smith Drive tomorrow in an early top-of-the-table clash. In the other encounter, Volvo host New Green at Drax Hall. Both are hunting their first points of the campaign.
KSAFA Major League Champions Allman/Woodford, still celebrating their title, lost 1-0 to Shortwood last Saturday on a weekend in which Real Mona hammered Meadforest 8-1. Allman/Woodford, who won the title last week, remain on 58 points after spoiling their impressive record, suffering only their second loss of the season from 24 games. Meanwhile, Paul Cunningham netted four times in Real Mona's 8-1 mauling of Meadforest at Buttercup Park. Brown's Town edged Maxfield Park 3-2 with goals from Gerald Hibbert, Rohan Rosseau and Richard Henry. Keno Simpson scored both goals for Maxfield Park. Bull Bay clipped Cooreville Gardens 1-0, as did Molynes United over New Kingston. The final points standing shows Allman/Woodford on 58, five ahead of Police National on 53. The Police National-Swallowfield game was not played last weekend. Third went to Shortwood United, also on 53 but from 24 games, with Real Mona finishing fourth on 42 points, ahead of Maxfield Park on 41. At the other end of the table, Swallowfield are at the bottom (13th) on 10 points from 23 games behind Molynes United (12th) on 11 points. New Kingston finished in 11th spot on 15 points. |
