Ver focused... athlete ready for 200m opener |
|||||
Jamaica's Veronica Campbell-Brown. Jamaican sprint queen Veronica Campbell-Brown says she is fully focused ahead of her 200m season opener at the Shanghai Diamond League meeting tomorrow. The meet will be the first time the athlete has competed in the event since taking the gold medal at last year's World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. "The objective going into this race is to see where I am at, very technical, and try and get my race together," Cambell-Brown told Reuters. The reigning Olympic champion in the event is expected to face some stiff competition from in-form American Carmelita Jeter, from who she pulled away down the stretch to claim first place in Daegu. "I'm expecting very good competition not only from Carmelita but from all the other ladies because I try not to underestimate anyone. "I go into all my races believing that everyone's going to run fast, so I focus on what I have to do to get to the finish line." The runner finished second to another American, Allyson Felix, at the Doha Diamond League a few days ago. Cambell-Brown finished 0.2 seconds behind Felix (10.92) with her compatriot, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, a close third. Felix is expected to be Campbell-Brown's major rival at the Olympic Games in London as she looks to wrest the crown away from the two-time champion. Despite the early season loss, however, Campbell-Brown is not overly perturbed. "My race showed that I was in very good shape, so I'm very excited about what's going to be happening later on this season and the competition among us females," she said. With the National Trials only a few weeks away, the sprinter, who missed out on qualification for the Beijing Olympic Games, admits to having one eye on the Trials. "Over the next couple of weeks, I'm going to be concentrating hard, running a few races and preparing for the Jamaica Trials, where I'm hoping to make the team for the London Olympics," she said. |
