Overseas-based Reggae Boy left back Nathan Smith is looking to bring a high work ethic to the team as they prepare to enter the semi-final round of CONCACAF qualifiers for the FIFA 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The 25-year-old, who plays his club football for Chesterfield in English League One, made the remarks yesterday following a media meet and greet briefing held at the Jamaica Football Federation offices in New Kingston. "When I came the last time I brought dedication, hard work and being a team player and that is what I hope to bring again," said Smith, who is one of nine overseas-based players named in the 24-man squad for their friendly international against Guyana on Friday. "I have been watching the team play in recent times and realise that we have a very good chance of making Brazil in 2014. "However, it will not be easy, and as such, we will need to come together, show heart and passion, and try to at all times play to the best of our abilities," he added. qualification Born in England, Smith earned his qualification for Jamaica based on the fact that both his grandparents are from St Elizabeth. Standing at 6'1'' he made his Reggae Boyz debut last October when he started against Honduras in a friendly international in Honduras. Honduras won 2-1 but Smith, who was among three new recruits, had a good match. The other new British-based players in that match were Bristol City's Marvin Elliott, and Brentford's Marcus Bean, "I play left back, but I like to get forward," explained Smith, who prior to joining Chesterfield this season, spent three seasons at another league one club, Yeovil Town. "I played a few games this season at centre back as well, and left wing, so I would consider myself a versatile player. But left back is my favoured position." The Guyana friendly will be held at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Friday, beginning at 8 p.m. SQUAD: Alonzo Adlam (Portmore United), Jacomena Barrett (Montego Bay United), Keammar Daley (Preston North End), Omar Daley (Motherwell), Claude Davis (Crawley Town), Sean Fraser (Alianza), Ewan Grandison (Portmore United), Rasario Harriott (Portmore United), Damion Hyatt (Arnett Gardens), Lance Laing (Fort Lauderdale Strikers) Renae Lloyd (Boys' Town), Jeremie Lynch (Boys' Town), Adrian Mariappa (Watford), Nyron Nosworthy (Watford), Rohan Reid (Arnett Gardens), Joel Senior (Harbour View), Luton Shelton (Karabukspor), Nathan Smith (Chesterfield), Troy Smith (Montego Bay), Errol Stevens (unattached), Damion Stewart (Notts County), Xavian Virgo (Boys' Town), Mitchily Waul (Tivoli Gardens), Dino Williams (Village United). |
