Man charged with abduction and robbery remanded

A St Catherine man who allegedly abducted a woman who he later stabbed and robbed was remanded when he appeared in court.

He is Mark Mathews of Spanish Town, St Catherine.

When Mathews appeared before the Spanish Town Resident Magis-trate's Court, he explained that he was not the owner or driver of a car.

"Your Honour, I need some bail, so please allow me to go look for my sick mother," Mathews said.

Resident Magistrate Marcia Dunbar-Green told him no bail would be granted.

The matter was then transferred to the Gun Court to be mentioned later this month.

Allegations are that on August 26 last year, Mathews along with two accomplices were in a car being operated as a robot taxi.

Upon reaching near Tastee Patties along Burke Road in Spanish Town, the complainant boarded the vehicle. She was forced to travel to the Hartlands area where she was stabbed with a broken bottle, robbed of her gold rings, chains, bracelets and other items of jewellery. The complainant was reportedly left to die, however, she managed to crawl to safety.

Investigations by the Spanish Town police led to the capture of Mathews who was reportedly positively identified.

He was subsequently charged with abduction and robbery with aggravation. The others are being sought by the police.
