The SDC National Twenty20 Community Cricket competition is an annual event now in its sixth year. It's geared towards advancing community development through sports.

This year's staging of the competition is expected to be bigger and better as teams are competing for $4 million in cash and prizes.

The first place cash prize for this year's national champion club has been increased to $1 million from last year's $750,000. The second place team will receive $500,000, third, $250,000 and fourth, $125,000. The parish champions will collect $100,000, second place $50,000 and third, $25,000.

Terence Richards, programmes co-ordinator for the SDC, who was in Yallahs for Sunday's matches said things have been going great in this year's competition.

"As many as 382 teams were registered for the competition which is organised in three phases - an elimination phase, a parish phase and the national phase," Richards said. "The elimination phase brought the teams down to a manageable total of 16 per parish. Eight matches are then played at four venues in each parish with the eight winners being placed in two groups of four. They will play a round-robin competition with the top two in each group moving on to the knockout semi-finals. The semi-final winners will meet in the parish final."

Richards was quick to point out that the SDC Twenty20 was not just about people playing cricket.

"It is a lot more than that," he said. "It you notice here today you will see a number of services. People can get their blood pressure checked, you can get a HIV test done and we also have here people from the Planning Institute of Jamaica who is one of our partners promoting the national development plan the 2030 vision. The cricket is therefore being used as a vehicle to highlight issues around the community," Richards added. The national final for the SDC Twenty20 is scheduled for August 26.
