Dear Counsellor: I found out I have HIV. I met my boyfriend six months ago. I do not think he infected me. Do you think he is also infected? We do not always use a condom. I am afraid to tell him. I have been discussing it with my mother and she said not to tell him because he must be infected also and when he finds out it is time enough. I do not really want him to leave me, because he is my financial source. What should I do? Worried Lover Dear Worried Lover: Your test does not always tell your partner's status. It is not automatic that he becomes infected as well. The only way to know is for him to get tested also. From what you mentioned in your letter, it is clear he is not the only sex partner for you. My suggestion is that you speak with an HIV-knowledgeable counsellor as soon as possible. You must use a condom every time you have sex to prevent your boyfriend from becoming infected if he is not yet infected or to prevent reinfection . For more information on HIV/AIDS, condom use and other sexually transmitted infections, call the AIDS /STD Helpline at 967-3830, 967-3764 or toll free at 1888-991-4444. |
