A man who tricked a woman three times and collected close to $100,000, was sentenced in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday. Anthony Holness, 48, pleaded guilty to three counts of larceny by trick. Allegations are that between March and April, Holness conned an elderly woman who believed he was a Christian in need of financial assistance. It is reported that on March 29, the complainant met the accused in Kingston and professed he was in need of financial assistance for his mother who was in hospital. The court heard that the complainant initially gave him $10,000 and then $8,000 on another occasion. It is further reported that Holness told the complainant his mother had died and he needed $80,000 to retrieve her body from the hospital. That was also given to him. However, the complainant became suspicious and reported the matter to the police. Holness was subsequently arrested and charged. In handing down her sentence, Resident Magistrate Stephanie Jackson-Haisley said the allegations were disturbing and Holness deserved a custodial sentence. He was sentenced to three months imprisonment on each count. The sentences are to run concurrently.
