Two years for stealing EOJ chairs

A 'born again' man who stole four chairs from the Electoral Office of Jamaica garnered extensive laughter in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

There were giggles and chuckles at different intervals as Hubert Mothersill, charged with simple larceny, tried to explain why he should not be sent to prison.

Despite his arguments and rebuttals, Mothersill was sentenced to two years imprisonment.

After he pleaded guilty, Mothersill explained how the chairs were taken from him, which amused the court.

"Them seh mi is a coke head so mi no supposed to have the chair in my possession," Mothersill outlined.

Mothersill, who is a repeat offender, explained that he had found Christ and wanted to avoid returning to prison so that he could live his Christain life. "Right now mi a beg yuh a chance cause mi haffi go baptise now ... right now, mi ago try the Lord," he emphasied which reignited the laughter.

Mothersill then explained that if he is returned to the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre, he would become hooked on drugs again because the environment is bad for him.

RM Pusey then proposed that she would ensure that he is remanded elsewhere, however, Mothersill explained that they are all the same, which attracted further laughter.

"Tamarind Farm is the same. Richmond is the same. I go to all three," he said. He was later whisked away from the court in handcuffs.
