Phillipps - File

Yendi Phillipps' announcement that she is expecting a child with dancehall artiste Chino McGregor has led to numerous comments from the public.

Phillipps shocked the masses on Sunday night when she announced that she was 17 weeks pregnant. As part of the disclosure, she told fans on Facebook and Twitter that McGregor is the expectant father. Despite being an item since 2011, this was the first time their relationship was being publicly confirmed. Since then, the social networks have been abuzz with persons expressing their views, even local celebrities.

"I love the fact that Yendi told her fans about her pregnancy first. Plus her and Chino seem happy so that's a plus," singer Ishawna said on Twitter.

Another person said, "I have a hard time understanding how we came to condemn Yendi when so many of us were born out of wedlock."

Since making the post on her public Facebook page on Sunday night, there have been almost 1,500 comments and close to 5,000 likes. Most of these persons congratulated her.

"Yay!!! Shocked, but I'm happy for you. Have a great pregnancy and enjoy what's to come," one person said.

Congratulations ... You will make a beautiful mother and strong role model for your child. Soooo happy for you," another said.

There were also numerous persons expressing disappointment.

"Unprotected sex. That too is the underlying message," one person commented on The Gleaner's website.

Another said, "Right yah now, me lose offa Yendi, thought she was wife material ... less than a year and she breed fi him without a ring."

But there were also persons who were indifferent about her pregnancy and didn't think it was news.

While Phillipps and McGregor are the ones expecting the child, people had a lot to say about her former beau Asafa Powell, who is the former 100 metre record holder. Throughout yesterday and Sunday night, photoshopped images ridiculing Powell also made their way into the public domain.

"All day Asafa a get style innuh. This is exactly why your business should be kept low-key," a man said on Twitter.

Many joked about how well he will be able to perform at this year's Olympics in London.

Yesterday afternoon, Phillipps made another post in which she thanked the public for their support.

"Thank you to everyone who recognises that God is love! Abundant blessings, life and positivity abound. To Him be all the glory!!," she said.

Minutes later, she made another post.

"There is simply one thing that I cannot resist speaking on. I believe it is my right to defend my deceased mother. For the individuals who are claiming to share what they believe would be the views of my mother and her disapproval, you know not of the relationship I had and still have with her," she said.

"Though I lost her at 16, we had an immense connection and spoke at great length about life; lessons that resonate still ... especially now. She was well known for preaching that if you had nothing good to say, say nothing; as the Bible says your words will come back to destroy you."

She ended yesterday afternoon's post with Bible scriptures from Proverbs 10.
