Blast Them Away again

Jimmie, Star Racing Writer

BLAST THEM AWAY should do just that when he faces 11 rivals in tomorrow's King's Plate at 1500 metres. Undefeated in five starts since debuting as a two-year-old last May, the United States-bred colt reeled off another fast time two Saturdays ago, clocking 1:18.4 for 1300 metres.

He won going away, beating a late-closing TRENDSETTER by three and a quarter lengths and should not at all be bothered by an extra furlong.

BLAST THEM AWAY tracked stablemate RIO COBRE into the lane and was in charge coming off the home turn before opening a three-length lead a furlong out.

It was a command performance by BLAST THEM AWAY in one of his five stops en route to grade one. Tomorrow will be his second and last outing in open allowance before stepping up to face the big boys and girl, SAINT CECELIA, in grade one.

Leading rider Dane Nelson is again aboard the talented American colt for champion trainer Wayne DaCosta, for what should be their second winner of the afternoon.

Nelson and DaCosta, sitting at the top of the jockeys' and trainers' standings, should win the previous race with SOCA PARTY who has been dropped in class to $180,000 claiming after finishing fifth among $450,000 company on March 31, beaten nine and a half lengths by ROMEZ at 1100 metres.

All is obviously not well with SOCA PARTY but she has been spotted at the pool five mornings since that effort and should have the measure of the lowest level of racers.

She placed fifth in a tough race won in 1:07.0 by ROMEZ who returned on Saturday at 1000 metres to chase home EMERGENCE dropping from overnight allowance.

Elsewhere on the programme, LADY MACBETH, who was understandably beaten by a fast 1:12.3 when arriving late against GOGO YVONNE on Easter Monday, gets a gift in the opening event at 1820 metres.

Note how the five-year-old American mare had won her previous race at 1500 metres, suggesting the longer she goes, the better she is.

Accumulator bettors can go after a quick triple midway the programme - PRIEST KING, FIRST 'K' BOY and PERSIAN GOLD in the fourth to sixth races.

The gelding PRIESTKING's pace should be too strong for the filly MARINE DRIVE in the fourth at 1400 metres.

Gary Subratie-trained PRIESTKING went out of his depth last time out at 2000 metres but will be far more effective at 1400, a furlong shorter than the mile, which he lost by a half length to THE LEGACY on March 28.

In the fifth, FIRST 'K' BOY returns to four-year-old non-winners-of-two as a winner without a penalty. His number was taken down on last when he beat rivals by two lengths but caused interference when going to the rail under Trevor Simpson's right-hand whip.

PERSIAN GOLD ran really well in the visor on March 28 when narrowly finishing fourth behind THE LEGACY, PRIESTKING and CUTTER at a mile. He won't be beaten at 1400 metres tomorrow.
