Mother charged with assault

A woman who was charged after allegedly beating her 15-year-old daughter for her involvement with men was told to return to the Corporate Area Resident Magis-trate's Court when she appeared yesterday.

She is Maria Buckley, charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, threatening of a Crown witness, common assault, disorderly conduct, assaulting a constable and resisting arrest. She was also told to give her fingerprints to the police.

The court heard that Buckley was seen by officers beating her daughter. When approached and told to desist, Buckley was unrelenting. She boxed the child repeatedly and punched her in the belly.

The court further heard that after she was arrested by the police, she threatened to kill the child, if she returned home. The mother also told the arresting officer that she would obeah her, the court heard.

In court, the accused denied beating the child and told Senior Resident Magistrate (RM) Judith Pusey that she merely boxed her because she was insolent.

By this time, Buckley had become enraged and was told to calm down by the RM who reprimanded her vociferously, telling her that one can no longer beat children as they did before. She was also told to familiarise herself with the Childcare and Protection Act.
