Jamaica captain Tamar Lambert says the celebration of the country's 50th year of Independence this year played a major role in motivating the team to their record fifth-straight win in the West Indies Cricket Board Regional Four-Day Tournament.

Jamaica registered a come-from-behind and surprising 139-run win over Barbados in the final at Sabina Park yesterday.

"The feeling is one of joy as the players really worked hard, and to know that we were able to break the record in this our 50th anniversary, the logo which is printed on our shirt sleeves, makes it all the more pleasing," said Lambert.

Jamaica, who resumed on yesterday's fourth day knowing that only an outright win could land them the title after Barbados had earlier claimed a first innings lead, were led to victory by a spirited spell of pace bowling from David Bernard Jr.

Bernard, who took the first four wickets to fall, claimed four for 34 as Barbados, set a victory target of 230 in over two sessions, were dismissed for 90.

Jamaica, who in winning held on to the George Headley and Sir Everton Weekes Trophy, had earlier declared their second innings at 247 for five.

"To win five straight was always our plan from the start of the season, and to end this season without losing any of our eight matches is testimony to the hard work that we have been putting in over the years."

Resuming yesterday at 133 and holding a 115-run lead, Jamaica, as expected, went for quick runs, and despite the spreading of the field by Barbados captain Shamarh Brooks, were able to achieve their goal.

Leading the way was first innings top scorer, Donovan Pagon, who made 45, Lambert, who hit 42 off 47 balls and wicketkeeper Horace Miller, who chipped in with 22 off 21.

Sulieman Benn, who was named Man of the Match for his nine wickets in the match, finished with four for 67.

When Barbados began their chase, they were put on the back foot from the very first over and never recovered.

They lost their first wicket with just two runs on the board when Rashidi Boucher was caught by wicketkeeper Horace Miller for no score after attempting a lazy drive outside off stump off an outswinger from Bernard.

Two overs later, it then became six for two when left-hander opener, Omar Phillips, was snapped up at second slip by Pagon.

It then got better for Jamaica five runs later when Kyle Hope again edged Bernard to first slip and was caught low down by Lambert to leave the Barbadians reeling at 11 for three.

There was a constant procession to and from the pavillion as Dwayne Smith and Jonathan Carter both fell cheaply as the visitors reached 39 for five at lunch.

Wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich and Brooks were dismissed shortly after the resumption. Dowrich, prodding to a delivery out of the bowler's footmarks, was caught at silly mid-on off Nikita Miller for a top score of 33.

Spinner Odean Brown then came to the party and after dismissing the defiant Brooks for five with the score on 68 for seven, he went on to claim the scalps of Javon Searles without scoring, and last man out Tino Best for eight. Miller ended with two for 12 in five overs and Brown three for nine in 4.3 overs.

Final scores: Jamaica 273 and 247 for five dec.; Barbados 291 and 90.
