Left-arm spinner Nikita Miller says being mentioned as a player who was a part of the Jamaica's historic five-time winning team is a big motivation for members of team heading into today's final of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Four-Day Tournament against Barbados at Sabina Park. Miller, who is the tournament's leading wicket-taker so far, with 43 wickets, five more than recent Test recall Shane Shillingford, made the remarks yesterday, shortly after the team's final training session at the venue. "At the start of the season, we all sat down and said that we wanted to be remembered as being a part of the team that makes history by winning the tournament for five straight years," said Miller. unbeaten "We are therefore happy to be in this position having being unbeaten so far and the hope is that we can carry through in this our 50th year of Independence." The final, which is slated to get under way at 10 a.m. each day, will see Jamaica, with a seven from seven win record, starting as favourites against the Bajans, who have so far won five and lost two of their games. Among those expected to lead the batting for the home team is Donovan Pagon, whose 453 runs at 34.84 has put him third on the leading run-getters list. Captain Tamar Lambert is fourth with 395 runs. The bowling, in the meantime, will be spearheaded by Miller, and his spin twin Odean Brown, who is sixth on the wicket-taking list, with 32 scalps, as well as fast bowlers Andrew Richardson, Sheldon Cotterell and all-rounder David Bernard Jr. Barbados, on the other hand, are expected to tag their hopes on the explosive and in-form Dwayne Smith, the tournament's fifth-highest runs getter, Jonathan Carter (393), enigmatic spinner Sulieman Benn and live wire Tino Best. "When we played Jamaica in the first match, we were beaten within three days and it sent us back to the drawing board," said Barbados manager Wendell Coppin. "However, we can assure that things are different now as the team is more physically and mentally ready for the challenge." JA SQUAD: Tamar Lambert (captain), David Bernard Jr (vice-captain), Xavier Marshall, Donovan Pagon, Brenton Parchment, Danza Hyatt, Horace Miller, Nikita Miller, Odean Brown, Andrew Richardson, Sheldon Cotterell, Jermaine Blackwood, Jamie Merchant. BD SQUAD: Shamarh Brooks (captain), Omar Phillips, Rashidi Boucher, Kyle Hope, Dwayne Smith, Jonathan Carter, Shane Dowrich, Carlos Brathwaite, Javon Searles, Sulieman Benn, Tino Best, Jomel Warrican, Justin Greaves. |
