Big netball clash today

Robert Bailey, STAR Writer

Defending champions Jamalco will be seeking their second consecutive victory in this year's Jamaica Netball Association (JNA)/Berger Paints Super League competition when they oppose arch-rivals Waulgro-vians 'A' at the Leila Robinson Courts today starting at 5:45 p.m.

Both teams met in the Jamaica National Building Society Open League and Jamalco emerged winners in the final and Wayne Shaw, manager of the Jamalco, said his team is expecting a very exciting game.

"It will be a very close game, but I expect us to come out on top," said Shaw. "It is going to be a huge game for both teams because this is a repeat of the Open League final, and so my players are upbeat and they are really looking forward to the clash," Shaw added.

The Winston Nevers-coached Jamalco will be led by former national captain Elaine Davis, and other recent Jamaica representatives Nicole Aiken, Althea Byfield, Marsha Murphy and Naudia Brown.

Confident of victory

On the other hand, Waulgro-vians are seeking a third straight win of the season, and according to Jhaniele Fowler, a senior member of the team, the players are confident of victory.

"I think that once we control the tempo of the game and counter their high passes, then we will stand a great chance of winning this game," said Fowler, who is also a national representative.

"We have been playing well so far because our players have been training very hard and so will be looking to our fitness to take us through," Fowler added.

In addition to Fowler, Waulgro-vians will be depending heavily on the likes of Paula Thompson, former national captain Simone Forbes and Nardia Hanson, to lead their quest for victory.

Meanwhile, in the Best Dressed Chicken Divisional 'B', Correctional Services tackle Jamaica Defence Force at 5:45 p.m. and New Kingston Raiders battle Police 'B' at 6:45 p.m.

In the lone Supreme Ventures 'A' League match 5:45 p.m. Friendship will oppose Alpha. In the 'C' League, Raven 'C' challenge Maxfield Park 'B' and Braeton await Alexander Strikers.
