Tight race for London

Michael Frater

Despite the potential to claim a fourth relay gold medal at a major event, MVP sprinter Michael Frater will not count his chickens before he hatches, and admits that even getting on Jamaica's relay team for the London Games will be tough.

With a personal best of 9.88 set in Lausanne, Switzerland, last year, Frater would be an automatic lock to take one of the top three spots for most country's teams. However, with five other athletes having dipped below the 10-second mark, in direct competition for a place on the national team, nothing is guaranteed, not even a spot on the 400m relay team.

Jamaican trials

''Definitely, a bunch of the guys have been saying if you make it through the Jamaican trials, you are pretty much guaranteed to get a medal at the Olympics,'' Frater told Australian publication The Age (theage.com).

The 29-year-old, a silver medallist at the 2005 World Championships, was a part of the gold medal 2008 Olympics relay team and followed that with subsequent appearances in the both the Berlin and Daegu World Championships. Each of those runs had only two athletes, impressive in their own right have only two athletes in common Michael Frater and Usain Bolt.

But, with competition so tough for a ticket to London the sprinter knows the focus must now be on the National Trials. In fact Frater had failed to secure an individual spot on the team for the 2011 Daegu World Championships, having missed out on a spot at the National Trials, and only did so following the disqualification of Steve Mullings for a doping offence.

''We are not thinking about Olympics [now], we know we have to get through the Olympic Trials and it is going to be a tough one. But I think we are again hands down to win the gold medal and again break the world record.''
