A man who pleaded guilty to breaking into a man's house stealing $450,000 begged for leniency in court on Tuesday, claiming that he recently lost his son and is depressed.

Barrington Osbourne who appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court confessed that he was pushed to do the wrong thing.

Osbourne who was remanded in court is also accused of chopping a police constable.

He is facing unlawful wounding, offensive weapon, housebreaking and larceny charges. Osbourne, who is to return to court on May 2 for sentencing, has only pleaded guilty to the housebreaking and larceny charges.

Allegations are that on the day in question, the accused broke into the complainant's home.

It is alleged that the complainant managed to call the police but, upon the arrival of the cops, the accused who was armed with a machete chopped one of the lawmen.

In court, Osbourne identified himself as the father of one of the students of the St Andrew College who drowned at the Shan Shy beach in Portland in February.

"I am not going to put a rope around my neck. I am traumatised with the death of my son, and my cousin believe me Your Honour. I broke in the house but, I ran from the house with nothing at all," Osbourne said.

In the meantime, Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey has requested Osbourne's records.
