Home stretch!

While it seems to be all but a foregone conclusion that Edwin Allen will win their first-ever Champs title, a keen tussle is expected to unfold for the boys title.

After beginning the day 16 points adrift of Kingston College, Calabar put on a late evening surge to end the evening on 118.50 points, ahead of Kingston College, who are now in second place on 102 points. Jamaica College are third on 89 points. Calabar picked up valuable points all around and with the team qualifying two athletes in most of today's final they are dangerously placed to go all the way. Kingston College will have to try and reproduce their form of the first two days, but it could very well be curtains for them as Calabar athletes are highly motivated with this being the centenary year of the institution, and what a win it would be, to celebrate in style.

Ominous mood

However, Stefan Fennell (KC) sounded a warning ahead of today's highly anticipated Class I 110m hurdles final, stopping the clock at 13.66, to win his heat. With Yannick Hart (Wolmer's), 13.82 and Omar McLeod (Manchester), 13.84 also in an ominous mood, many feel that the 13.53 record set by KC's Keiron Stewart in 2007 may soon be a thing of that past.

Things are different, however, for the girls as the Michael Dyke-coached team from Frankfield, Clarendon are well set to dethrone the nine-time champions. They have a lead of 76 points over their rivals. After qualifying two athletes in most of today's finals they are set to extend their lead and could even get to the 400 mark.

Edwin Allen coach Michael Dyke is very comfortable with the position the team are in going into the final day with and believes it will definitely be a winning position.

"We are not celebrating as yet, because we still have another day to go, and we start everyday at zero," Dyke said.

"We knew the throwers would have set the pace for us, and once they do that the top people would have taken care of business," he added.

It was a bad day for Holmwood yesterday, as they lost two of their athletes due to injury. Chris Ann Gordon, who has never lost in the 400 metres at these championships was the first casualty, as she stopped at the first 100 metres in her Class II 400 metres semi-final.

They also lost another Class II athlete as Diana Johnson suffered a hamstring injury at the 90-metre mark in the final of the Girls Class 100 metres final.
