Convicted child killer awaits sentencing |

The convicted child killer Jeffery Perry is to know today if he will spend the rest of his life in prison. It is reported that during submissions yesterday in the Appeal Court, Perry's attorney, Ravi Golding, recommended a sentence of life imprisonment with conditions. Golding urged that his client serve 35 years plus the seven years he has already served before becoming eligible for parole. It is reported that Golding admitted that his client committed an "evil" and "horrendous" act when he hacked to death three children in Killancholly, St Mary, in January 2005. However, he said Perry suffered from a mental disease at the time. Perry, who was facing the death penalty following his 2008 conviction, was spared on Tuesday when the court quashed the death sentence. This after the director of public prosecutions conceded that her office had not sought the death penalty in writing as required by law during Perry's sentencing hearing. Golding argued that while the murders were brutal, they were not premeditated. He said Perry, who was related to the victims, had a good relationship with them. According to Golding, the psychiatric report submitted at the trial showed that Perry suffered from obsessive compulsive disorder. He said Perry had impulses and urges which were difficult to control. In 2005, Perry gave a statement in which he explained how he attacked the children while they were asleep. He said he heard voices in his head that told him to kill them. Golding urged the Appeal Court to take into consideration that Perry had a mental disease when he killed the children. |
