Dynamic KC ready to strike |
|||||
Keneil Grant - Ricardo Makyn Kingston College head coach Michael Russell has hailed his team as the most dynamic he has seen in recent years, and is confident of taking the title back to North Street. After leading for a long time last year and being overtaken by eventual champions Jamaica College late on the final day, the Kingston College coaching staff is highly optimistic this time around and will be hoping to regain the title. The team have looked awesome so far this season and they had a good all-round performance at the Gibson Relays. However, it was at that same meet that they suffered a major setback, which could cost them the championships this weekend. Their top Class II sprinter Rojae Fearon, who was expected to win the 100 metres at Champs and also pick up valuable points in the 200 metres, injured himself on the anchor leg of the 4x100 metres relay with his team in front. However, Russell does not see that as a major setback. a big setback "It is a fact that Fearon is a top-class athlete and our top man in Class III but I do not see that as a big setback, as we have good replacement and I think the other guys will step up big time," he said. Russell also stated that Fearon has recovered from his injury but will not risk him at Champs. "He has recovered somewhat but with his preparation for Champs being hindered, we are not going to rush him to compete because he is young and has a bright future. We would not be doing anything to ruin that," said Russell. Russell thinks the KC team is one of the strongest in years and likes the depth of the squad. "Over the years we were strong in one area, but this time around right across the board we have quality athletes on both the track and in the field and I expect a very close Championships but our boys are ready to deliver," he continued. "When there are more than three teams with a good chance of winning we always deliver. Last year, Calabar's challenge petered out quickly, which allowed Jamaica college to go on and win, but once more than two teams have a fighting chance that is good for us," he said. |
