FORMER champion trainer Philip Feanny is looking for an equally impressive performance from another of his 2000 Guineas hopefuls, JARREAU, when the colt goes for consecutive victories in tomorrow's sixth event at a mile. On Saturday, JARREAU's stablemate, RUNJOHNNY RUN, defeated a field which included United States-bred runners at 1100 metres, clocking a fast 1:06.3. Prepping for Saturday's race, RUNJOHNNY RUN had posted 1:07.2 at exercise, beaten in that workout by JARREAU, who clocked an eye-popping 1:06.4. The chestnut gelding returns tomorrow treated with lasix for his fourth start after galloping home a length and a half clear of RAINBOW MAN at 1300 metres for his maiden victory on February 8. RAINBOW MAN came out of that race and carried the Prince Consort Stakes field to the furlong pole, running favourites PRINCE ANDREW and UNCLE DONNY off their legs before being caught by champion trainer Wayne DaCosta's much-improved grey, ITALIANO. With the 2000 Guineas set for Easter Monday, April 9, an impressive victory by JARREAU will put him on a collision course with ITALIANO, who won both the Sir Howard and Prince Consort Stakes, important prep races for the Guineas. Drawn widest at post-position nine for tomorrow's restricted stakes, JARREAU is up against local-breds who have won one race and maiden imported horses. Among the local-breds, DaCosta's filly, ANTOINETTE, who won impressively on debut, should be JARREAU's only threat. She really looked comfortable down the backstretch, making all against return winner MEROVINGIAN QUEEN at 1300 metres, posting 1:21.1 in a two-length victory on February 29. ANTOINETTE's time at the distance was better than JARREAU's 1:22.0. However, it should be noted that the track has been excessively fast since the back-end of February and all of March, whereas JARREAU had won on a normal surface on February 8. Another filly, United States-bred JAH LOVE from Peter McMaster's barn, is being touted after finishing six and a quarter length fourth behind PRINCESS NIYAH, HOWGREATTHOUARE and DOUBLE BUTTON at 1200 metres on debut. She was closing at the end after being outpaced and her backers believe the additional two furlongs will be to the foreigner's liking. However, RUNJOHNNY RUN took out HOWGREATTHOUARE and DOUBLE BUTTON on Saturday, providing a marker for Feanny who watched JARREAU dismantle RUNJOHNNYRUN at exercise. With the rapid improvement shown at exercise since his last race, JARREAU could very well put on a Guineas-winning performance tomorrow. |
