FOUR-TIME champion jockey Omar Walker is happy that his name has finally been cleared by the Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC) after being accused of causing female apprentice Georgina Sergeon to fall from TRICKY TRAIN and suffer life-threatening injuries at Caymanas Park on January 21. Walker's mount, DOLLA WIN, was disqualified by the stewards and the jockey faced a possible lengthy ban when he appeared before the commissioners of the JRC last Thursday. However, the four-time champion jockey, represented by media personality Ed Barnes, said he was never in doubt that his name would have been cleared at Winchester Road. "I explained to them what happened in the race," Walker told STAR Sports. "If you watch the film you could see Georgina's horse drifting. She drew three and ended up beside me, who drew 12," he pointed out. "Instead of staying inside, she was drifting. Down the backstretch, SKIPPINGFORTREASURE was inside of me, and coming to the three she was in line with SKIPPINGFORTREASURE. I was outside and had to step a little off them. "Coming into the bend, I held my ground when I straightened and went by. I knew I had cleared them but still did not come down." Walker said the film clearly showed that it was Sergeon who had changed course off the turn during the 1200-metre race. "I was holding my ground, at no point was I coming down. It was she, instead of taking a pull, who came out. I am not even sure if she clipped my horse. I felt no vibration, I didn't even know somebody fell in the race until I came back and they told me Georgina fell." Walker, who has won the championship at Caymanas Park a remarkable four times since he started riding in 2006, said he had tried explaining the situation to the stewards on duty at Caymanas Park. "I went back to stewards' room and told them it couldn't be my horse but they claimed I had tapped my horse on the shoulder. "The commissioners listened to what I was saying. I was showing them her rein, her outside rein was slack, she had no control, coming down into a position that was tight. I had to be stepping out for her. You could see she was changing course by turning her horse's head," he added. Walker said Sergeon, who was represented by an attorney at the hearing, claimed she was calling out to him. "She said I was intimidating her. She said she was calling to me, all now I don't hear her calling me. As a jockey, if you hear a calling and you go by, you'd at least look back," he said. |
