INDECOM investigates fatal shootings

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM )is investigating the fatal shootings of 27-year-old Pierre Hawthorne in Stewart Town, St Mary, and Dwyer Johnson, 27, of St Thomas.

INDECOM has reported that Hawthorne was fatally shot by a constable of the Port Maria Police Station, using his private firearm, about 2:30 a.m., on Saturday, at a bar.

Ann-Marie McCatty and Wilmoth Simpson were injured in the incident.

It is alleged that Hawthorne bounced the constable while at the bar and an argument developed.

Hawthorne, it is alleged, left and returned with a knife which he used to attack the constable who fired from his private firearm.

Hawthorne was shot in the head.

He was then taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Johnson, a fisherman, was shot and killed by the police at approximately 10:50 a.m. on Sunday.

The police report that a group of officers were on an enquiry which led them to a house in Pleasant Walk, St Thomas.

Upon approaching the house, they saw two men, one of whom got up and pulled a firearm from his waist and pointed it in the direction of the police.

The police responded to the threat and opened fire. Johnson was hit.

He was taken to the Princess Margret Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

It was also reported that a firearm was recovered.

This incident scene was also processed by INDECOM's forensic team.

INDECOM is appealing to anyone with information that can assist with any of these investigations to call or visit the offices in Kingston any day of the week or to visit the INDECOM satellite centre located on the property of the Coke Methodist Church - 32 Queens Street, Morant Bay - on Fridays between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
