GEORGE HENRY, STAR Writer
Users of the Limit to Christiana main road in Manchester, espe-cially public transport operators who make several trips on that thoroughfare daily, are calling on the authorities to repair the road. Transport operators told THE STAR on the weekend that the the road which has been in its current state for almost two years must be attended to because it is having a significant impact on their vehicles and their pockets. Describing the road as having a checkerboard pattern, transport operators explained that their life and that of their passengers are being put at risk, as they have had several near misses as they try to avoid dangerous potholes. dangerous potholes They also noted that not only is the situation dangerous during the dry days, but that it becomes even more dangerous whenever it rains, because they are unable to see the pothholes filled with water. Wayne Clarke who has been plying the Spalding to Christiana route for more than 15 years told THE STAR that over the years he has never seen the road in a worse state, and he like his fellow taxi operators, have been forced to frequently repair their vehicles especially on front ends spending thousands of dollars weekly. front end repairs "This road is causing serious damage to our vehicles. We want it repaired right now because we cannot afford to be going to the mechanic so often. I had to take three days off the road last week to repair the front end of my car; and I have to be buying tyres regularly because of the poor state of the road. This week alone I spent over twenty thousand dollars on my car for repair," said Clarke. Clarke and other operators said if the road is not repaired soon, they may have to withdraw their service, as they cannot afford to be spending all they are earning to repair their vehicles, because of a problem for which they are not responsible. He is calling on the National Works Agency to repair the road and has also called on the Government to allocate funds from the gas tax to this end. |
