Mattocks on the mend |

Ryon Jones, Star Writer This year's second overall pick in the 2012 Major League Soccer Super Draft, Darren Mattocks, is recovering well after being involved in a freak accident last Sunday, according to his mother. The 21-year-old Mattocks, who was picked by the Vancouver Whitecaps in January, suffered minor burns while cooking in his apartment and had to seek treatment at St Paul's Hospital. "He is fine, it's nothing serious. It is just that he was cooking his dinner Sunday evening and the frying pan with the hot oil slipped off the stove and the oil splashed and burned his right hand," Mattock's mother, Lasmine Montegue, told Star Sports. "He has been treated for it and he is doing well, but nobody is at home with him there now and he got burned on his right hand that he uses to cook and wash," she said. Montegue is only too aware of what her son might be going through, as another of her sons had suffered much more severe injuries from burns he received when he was Mattocks' age, but has since fully recovered. She stated that she plans to go and visit Mattocks soon. The Whitecaps coach, Martin Rennie, did not shed much light on the seriousness of the burns suffered by Mattocks according to a report by The Province. When asked if the club could do anything more with their young players to prevent such freak injuries, Rennie replied: "I'm trying to teach them how to do an overlapping run - that's hard enough." "I think he'll be fine," said Rennie, who was reportedly the first person to visit Mattocks at the hospital. "It's just a setback for him. It's obviously disappointing for him and for us. He's right there on the cusp of being in the team." Mattocks made his professional debut in the 89th minute of Vancouver's 2-0 win over Montreal on the opening day of the season.
