Shareholders and partners of Yardie Nyammins & Things were judged the best overall group in Portmore Community College's Business Practice for 2012, during the entrepreneurship programme at the Portmore HEART Academy recently. 'Yardie' also snatched first place for booth design, and second in speech. Second place went to La Fiesta Deli. They were first in speech, via their manager Laphian Atterbury, second in uniform and second in booth design. Third place went to Daiq-Café Et Des Variete; they were also judged 'best originality', and 'best uniform'. 'Yardie' specialises in local dishes which is uniquely done to attract food lovers. One of their best-sellers was the delicious ackee pizza. Meanwhile, guest speaker Amina Blackwood-Meeks and the school's principal, Karen Kennedy, urged the entrepreneurs to continue the work they started by joining the school's business programme. Yanique Douglas McCarthy, the resource manager and spokesperson for Yardie Nyammins & Things, said that her group "put their all into the project". "I believe all the other groups put in 100 per cent, however, we put in 200 per cent. We sat up a lot of nights, I mean that we can do anything we can to turn our hands and make fashion. We are hard workers, we wanted it so long," she said. "The purpose of this business programme is to train young people to be entrepreneurs. You learn to open your own business so you can employ others instead of you seeking employment," she said.
